I can't get my LG GW 620 phone to be recognised by my laptop. What can I do?

I plug the USB into my Dell laptop and sometimes the G drive pops up but then when I open it, it says insert something into G drive and won't allow me to do anything further. I've followed all the instructions, mounted the SD card, etc. I've downloaded drivers from the LG website. Everything! But it just won't work properly. The computer knows that it's plugged in. You can find it under devices and printers, but when you select Browse, it won't let you. The option is grey. So how can I download stuff onto my mobile phone and vice versa!?
