Why do Christians re-enact the pion of Jesus?
First let me say that I'm Catholic. My church is pionate about the crucifixion, and it's very prevalent during lent. They even show a cartoon version to the elementary religion cles. I however, find it to be sadistic, unnecessary, and desensitizing to the violence. If Jesus died for us, to save us from pain, would he want us to relive his death every Easter? Can we be sad about the death and focus on the resurrection? Is there a biblical precidence for dramatizing it? Did Jesus want us to? I find it disrespectful to his memory to focus on the brutality of it. I imagine Jesus in heaven saying, "Y'all got it all wrong, I did this to free you from pain, not to have you sit in churches and movie theaters crying over my bloody body" There is no honor for Jesus in that type of martyrdom. It feels like the opposite of his ministry. I have a difficult time explaining my feelings to people at church without sounding angry and disrespectful. Why do we make the pion so graphic?
